On My Mind: Words From The Publisher

By Rhee Gold, Publisher

Smart Business, A Little History, And As Always, Inspiration

Dear Friends,

By now most of us are back to the good ol’ teaching schedule and about ready for a bit of motivation. This issue’s special section, “Those Who Inspire,” should do the trick! Read about how one teacher’s unselfish attitude led her to take in another school owner who lost everything. Together they shared space, tap shoes, and the joy of friendship, setting an example for all of us.

For more inspirational reading, turn to the story about Joseph Giacobbe, a school owner and director of Delta Festival Ballet, based in hurricane-stricken Metairie, LA—and one of my mentors and personal friends. His ability to keep going when it would have been easier to pack it in and close will make us all realize that teaching dance is something we just can’t give up, no matter what obstacles we must overcome.

Business-minded readers should make sure to check out a unique approach to promoting their schools in “Driven to Advertise,” which just might trigger an entirely new way of thinking about creative advertising. Another article, “Smart Stewardship,” offers advice on how to run your business effectively and efficiently— so that it doesn’t start running you.

If you’re a history buff like me and enjoy reading about those who paved the way for today’s teachers and school owners, don’t miss the pictorial history of the Hoctor family. Danny Hoctor and his wife, Betty, were early pioneers in the convention world, launching Dance Caravan in 1959. See them in the early days when they were performing professionally, along with some cool pictures of conventions, the way they were when it all started. Also in this section is an in-depth exploration of the life of a master teacher—from five of the country’s best!

As always, Goldrush offers you articles packed with information and ideas to improve your classrooms. Discover how to build self-esteem in your students, teach to their learning styles, guide them into the right college programs, and much more.

Once again, thanks for your continued support of Goldrush. I look forward to seeing many of you at the UDMA Dance Resource and Costume Preview shows these next two months.

Enjoy!
