NEW ORLEANS' DELTA FESTIVAL BALLET ASKS FOR DONATIONS

Like so many New Orleans institutions, the Delta Festival Ballet, the oldest ballet company in the Metropolitan New Orleans community, suffered major losses in Hurricane Katrina. Property damages and lost revenue are estimated at over $235,000.

The company originated in 1967 as the Giacobbe Ballet Ensemble, and evolved into a community company in 1969. The company achieved professional status in 1981 and has since earned a reputation as one of Louisiana’s important performing arts organizations.

The most pressing issue for the company now is restoring or replacing the Nutcracker scenery that was designed by Tony award winning designer, Robert O’Hearn. The company is requesting donations to help it begin the long road to recovery. It is anxious to once again present vibrant dance performances to a community now much in need of the comfort offered by every art form.

Delta Festival Ballet is a 501(c)(3) status, not-for-profit, tax exempt organization, incorporated by the State of Louisiana; all contributions are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law. Contributions should be made to Delta Festival Ballet Katrina Fund and sent to: Delta Festival Ballet, Post Office Box 7425, Metairie, LA 70002. Any help will be appreciated.

The Capezio Ballet Makers Dance Foundation is proud to announce the selection of Donald Saddler as the 55th recipient of the Capezio Dance Award.

Mr. Saddler made his first foray into choreography in 1950 as assistant choreographer for the original production of Call Me Madam. In 1953, he won his first Tony Award for choreography of Wonderful Town. A second Tony followed in 1971 for the musical staging of the revival of No, No Nanette, for which he also won a New York Drama Desk Award.

This was just the beginning of a versatile, prolific and distinguished career as a choreographer, stager, and director of musicals, operas, ballets, films and television productions.

Mr. Saddler has since choreographed for the New York City Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, the Dallas Civic Opera, and the Washington Opera. Amongst his ballet credits are productions for the Robert Joffrey Ballet, the Harkness Ballet, the Cincinnati Ballet, and his alma mater, the American Ballet Theatre. His television credits include the PBS production of Alice in Wonderland, the CBS production of Much Ado About Nothing and the Tony Awards. His film work includes Woody Allen’s Radio Days, April in Paris with Doris Day, By the Light of the Silvery Moon, and Young at Heart with Frank Sinatra.

As the 55th recipient of the Capezio Dance Award, Mr. Saddler joins dance luminaries Martha Graham, Jerome Robbins, Mark Morris, Alvin Ailey, Savion Glover and last year’s recipient, Suzanne Farrell.

The Capezio Ballet Makers Dance Foundation will present the 2006 Award and the accompanying $10,000 honorarium to Mr. Saddler at a ceremony to be held at The Pierre on June 5, 2006.
