Ray
Hollingsworth has been an inspiration to me for my entire
dance career. I attended my first convention ever, with H&H
Dance Troupe in San Antonio, TX in the early 80s. I think I
was nine years old.
My mom, my
dance teacher, and I drove down from Fort Worth to attend the
convention. It was such an amazing and eye-opening experience.
I especially remember one of the teachers, Kenneth Greene,
talking with me and encouraging me.
My teacher,
Janis Rosenthal, had mentioned in the car on the way down that
there was a showcase on the first night of the convention and
that we should try to perform in it the next year. I told her
that I happened to have my practice tape in my dance bag and
to sign me up for this year! I had a plain black leotard with
me and borrowed a top hat and bowtie from a contestant who
performed just moments before me. Long story short—I won the
very first Hempleman Scholarship.
I am
certain that weekend changed my life and inspired me to go on
to make dance my career. I now have my own dance studio in
Burleson, TX and my trophy from that weekend is proudly
displayed.

Thank you
for the article about Helen Wilson and the teacher she had
trained and then left to open her own studio [Hard Lesson.
Happy Ending., Jan/Feb 2006]. Our studio
experienced the same thing this past year and it was to say
the least, very sad for me personally as the director and
teacher. The article was like I was reading about myself. We,
too, are in a better place now and although our students were
asked to change studios, only five of them did. Glad to know
that someone else survived this nightmare. I, too, was
threatened with a lawsuit, but all this has now come to an
end.

I just read
the Dynamic Duo [Jan/Feb 2006] article from your latest
Goldrush and it was incredibly inspiring! The rapid
growth, the family connections, the reminders that your
customer is always your best marketing resource – it was all
great. I am getting ready to open my own studio this spring
and the daily ‘self doubts’ creep in, even though I know I
have done all my homework and I am so ready for this. I have
printed your article to help as inspiration to battle as I
march forward to success. Thanks for such a great boost!

I wanted to
write and tell you how much I enjoy your magazine. I find it
well-written and very informative, with lots of helpful
information for the dancer and the studio owner. I am a
graduate of the National Ballet School Of Canada. I was a
soloist with the National Ballet Company of Canada for eight
years, and guest principle artist with Ballet Florida,
California Ballet and San Francisco Ballet, to mention a few.
I have owned and operated my own two dance schools for over 22
years with a student body of over 1700 students and a staff of
40. I felt that even though you have to have the commercial
side of business in any magazine with your advertisers, that
there was a still a lot of good content as well in your
publication. Thank you, and BRAVO!!!
