Words from our readers

I wanted to tell you how
impressed I am with this issue [Sept/Oct] of
Goldrush
from
the cover to the end...it is a great look and the information
was great!

Just wanted to thank you
so much for the article on Ray [Hollingsworth]. We really liked
it and wanted to let you know that it meant a great deal to us
and especially Ray. He is so proud of it! Thanks for caring not
only for us, but about all the people that you sincerely are
interested in and know and love. Much appreciation and love,

I just got my
Goldrush
and
the article on Ray [Hollingsworth] is so fantastic. Thank you so
much for bringing him into the light once more. I love the big
picture of him as a GI, dancing in uniform. He sure was
handsome....just like he says. I know that you have made him
very proud and honored. My heart goes out to him every day, for
being such a wonderful mentor to me and for the suffering he
goes through now. I imagine that article you did was like the
balm of Gilliad for him.

Received the latest
Goldrush
—
as always loved all of it! Thank you for the article on body
image and eating disorders. Much needed info for all dance
teachers. We’ve done whole workshops on eating disorders and
healthy body image and it’s a topic that definitely needs to be
addressed with all dancers. Thanks again, keep up the great
work!

I am sitting here reading your newest
Goldrush—
still amazed that not long ago I was reading my little folded
copy of your small newsletter you shared with so many of us
dance educators and now you have this wonderful magazine!
Congratulations on your success with the Goldrush.
I have a
question...........I just finished reading “Business is
Business” [Sept/Oct]. I think any studio owner can relate to
this article whether it has happened to us or not. My question
is, a few of the contributors with answers mention a contract. I
have not yet hired any teachers to work for me on a full time
basis but as I get older and move on with my personal life, I
feel the day is coming soon when I will need help and just some
time to myself instead of being a slave to my studio seven
days a week. Is there a formal contract that protects studio
owners from a teacher they hire going on to open a school close
by and possibly taking your students with them? I am very much
interested in any information you can provide me on this
subject. No dance studio owner who has worked hard for years
wants to take risks. “Business is business” so I want to make
sure I am covering my “tutu” and protecting myself and my
business in every way I can. Thanks for a great magazine and I
appreciate any info you have about my question.

Dear Melissa:
In this issue, you’ll
find an article that has an accompanying sample employment
contract. Feel free to see if it might be a good starting point
for you to develop your own contract when you’re ready, and
always run things like this by a local attorney to make sure
it’s a good fit for your business, and legal in your state. But
the article in which that contract appears also drives home the
point that no matter how much you try, you can’t guarantee
you’ll be protected against everything, whether you have a
contract or not.
