Nutcracker Input

I’m interested in producing the Nutcracker this Christmas season with the students from my school. We have a serious ballet program and I think it’s time to offer a performance venue for these dancers, but I don’t know where to begin. Do I have to buy the rights to use the name, Nutcracker . . . if I do where do I go to do that?

How do other schools handle the costuming? Do they invest in the wardrobe and then own it or do they costume each season and the dancers purchase the costumes? Is there a place that specializes in costumes for the Nutcracker?

Am I allowed to change the format of the Nutcracker? Maybe modernize it a little? What have other teachers done?

How long do other schools run their Nutcracker performances? Is it a one-night thing or many performances? When do you start rehearsing? Any input would be appreciated--Amanda
