Creative
Roadblock
I teach at
both a private school and at the college level, between the
two I have an enormous amount of choreography
responsibilities. The choreography that I create is for a wide
range of levels, from three-year-olds to modern pieces for the
college company. Ten years ago my work was fresh and I felt
like a creative genius . . . for a while. Stale is how
I describe my work now, not that the audiences don’t
appreciate it, but I know in my gut that it’s been status
quo for a while.
I’m not
interested in moving in the direction of hip-hop or trends,
but I want to be with the times and I want to be creative.
What do other teachers/choreographers do for choreography
inspiration? What performances do they see or do they go
to special choreography workshops? Is it the music that
inspires them and then they work on the choreography or is it
something else? Feedback on this topic would be excellent.
Thanks—Deborah
