Not Sure What To Do

Dear Goldrush,

Growing up I competed in dance competitions and did very well, and I know it helped to make me a better dancer. Today, I have my own school (6 years) and I haven’t dabbled in competition yet. When I started, it was part of my plan, but I found that most of my kids (and their parents) wanted to be recreational students; they didn’t want to come in more than one or two days a week. It turned out that the competition thing never was an issue until this past year.

We did a mall show for Muscular Dystrophy, along with several of the competitive schools in my area. To my surprise, my good ole recreational students performed just as well as these competitive kids who dance all the time. I was proud!

Then some of the teachers and students from the other school started asking my kids what competitions they did. Most of my students didn’t know what they were, but they were curious. When they asked me about it, I explained that competition takes a lot more time and expense than what they were used to. And to be honest, I tried to drop the subject.

Now my kids are begging me to go to competition, some have gone to watch the schools that were in the mall show with us. They then come to me saying that they love it and want me to enter them in one. Do I need to do this? Will I lose these students if I don’t? I need to know how other teachers handle this kind of situation . . . please!

Thank you—Maryann
