I just read the article about modern dance [“Modern on the
Rise”, December 2006], and thank you for publishing it. Ever
since I left New York it has been one of my goals to educate
[my] area and the studio world about the importance and beauty
of modern dance. The article brought up so many good and valid
points that modern has to offer, and its importance in dance
history past and future. I am teaching tonight (two modern
classes in fact), and I am pumped to get there! Thanks again
for the magazine; I love it!

Thank you for making me look so good in the
article by Misty Lown [“For the Greater Good”, December
2006]. Photographing dancers is one of the most exciting and
beautiful things I do. The images I have taken are, for the
most part, self-assignment work, so it is even more rewarding
to know that others appreciate my vision. It is affirming to
know that people who understand and are passionate about dance
think what I do is of value. After telling my daughter about
working with you, she said, “See, that is why you had me!
All that money you spent on dance was not a waste.” I am
forever grateful to you and your staff!

I own a dance studio in Youngstown, OH. I
received your [November] edition, “Everything Recital,”
[and] I love the costume and song selection ideas! It was very
helpful and we are using many of them. Our studio is brandnew
this year and I want the show to be our best form of
advertisement. I almost decided not to have a theme since we
only have 50 students this year, but I was captured by the
family theme, plus it gave me great ideas to add myself, just
when I needed them. Thanks again!

I would like to add my accolades to the many who
speak so highly of your magazine! In a dance world overrun
with competitions, I sometimes feel as if the technical
training and pure joy of dancing has been replaced by the
latest dance tricks and pasted-on smiles. Your articles give
me hope that there are still dance teachers out there who
truly have their students’ emotional and physical well-being
foremost in their hearts.
I also appreciate your direct dialogue with
regard to every teacher’s number one headache, parents! At
the same time, you are willing to say to a teacher “ . . .
realize that you’ve made a mistake” [“Ask Rhee,”
January/February 2007]. How I wish your magazine had been in
print during the 30 years I owned my two schools! It would
have saved me many a sleepless night.
Even though I am retired, I thoroughly enjoy Goldrush.
I am constantly cutting out the articles and sending
copies to several of my former students who have schools of
their own. Now if they’ll only listen to the voices of
experience! Thanks so much!

Thank you for your answer in January/ February
2007’s “Question of the Month” [to the] mom concerned
over comments made by her child’s teacher regarding weight.
Your answer, coupled with the final sentence in “Educating
Your Students’ Parents” in the same issue, was absolutely
deadon. We are educating minds, bodies, and souls of
children, and partnering with parents in developing lifelong
skills. Planting seeds of self-doubt and pummeling young
self-esteem through comments [about] weight are not in my job
description!
As one who has struggled with weight and yet has
had a true love affair with dance all my life, I have heard
comments on my body and struggled with my self-image. It has
been a long, hard road to overcome, but I can say that I am
grateful for these difficulties. They have made me a more
compassionate teacher with a personal understanding of
childhood/ adolescence struggles. Thank you again for
reminding us that our students are precious souls who are so
much more than just bodies to choreograph on.
